Electricstate Projects

Friday, September 16th, 2005

On the home page of this website, you’ll notice a number of projects mentioned in the sidebar. Allow me to formally introduce them to you.

  • Audition
  • Audition is simple website software – like Wordpress, or Drupal – that makes it possible to run a website for a band. I created this out of necessity for Oliverband.com, and it’s come in handy. Check it out.
  • iPod bartender / iPod bartender shuffle
  • My first web app to really make a splash with the Mac community, the iPod bartender is a compendium, in iPod notes format, of drink recipes that you can take on the go. There are 230 recipes – sure, not as much as some others, but the iPod bartender is free. Plus, the iPod bartender shuffle lets you specify drink categories, and load a random set of drinks onto your iPod. What other webapps can do that?
  • LinkFinder
  • A web app of which I’m really proud, LinkFinder is basically a web-enabled, iTunes for bookmarks. Using remote scripting (before it was fashionable, changed its name to Ajax, and stopped returning my phone calls) , LinkFinder lets you manage, drag-and-drop and search bookmarks and RSS feeds from the comfort of your web browser. It requires PHP 5, and there’s no demo yet, but you can feel free to download the source, and see where it’s at. Development will be starting up again soon.
  • Sexycal
The calendar that ships with Wordpress is ugly. The sexycal plugin aims to change that. Sure, there are other calendar plugins out there – even some that use Ajax, like this one does. But are any as pretty? Will any love you as much, as unconditionally, as Sexycal? Coming soon. Give me some features for Sexycal, while I’m cleaning up the code and making it reusable.

So, whatcha think?

The iPod bartender continues ’round the internet

Let’s chart some of the places my little app has been:

  • MacFeber

And there were others – but you can’t expect me to name all of them, can you? That would take hours ! (< /smirk) I mean, I even got a few clickthroughs from someplace called boobiebattle.com (although I have a sneaking suspicion that was referer spam rearing its ugly head. :-) )

Sigh

Comments have been disabled, until I have the time to integrate some sort of anti-spam system.

Update: Well, since you’re seeing that comments are enabled, it stands to reason that I’ve taken some anti-spam measures. Hopefully they will prove fruitful.

iPod bartender 1.1 + Ajax-Powered Live Preview

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

First, we’ll get through with the boring stuff:

iPod bartender 1.1, changes since 1.0

1. Minor typos, drink omissions fixed
2. change to .link files to list the drinks, store all drinks in a /db/ subfolder.

What does this accomplish? Well, it frees up some space on your iPod, which can only have ~ 1000 notes active at any one time. Now, rather than duplicating files across our 16-category database, we have our 230 drinks stored in one folder, and use files to link to them. It’s more sensible.

Live Preview

Now here’s what’s more fun about the revamped iPod bartender and iPod bartender shuffle page: live preview. If you have IE 6 for Windows (oy), Mozilla, Firefox or Safari, simply select your iPod bartender shuffle criteria, as before, but instead of clicking “download iPod bartender shuffle,” click “live preview.” Voila! You can see exactly what drinks were randomly selected for you, on the iPod to your right. Clicking the forward and back buttons navigate the generated list, and clicking the play button downloads the boozemix.

And for the truly fearless among us, the “download iPod bartender shuffle” button will still download, randomly and unseen, a list of drinks that match your criteria. Now it’s really for the most experimental among us!

Let me know what you think.

iPod bartender and iPod bartender shuffle

Monday, April 4th, 2005

The iPod shuffle is a party, at least according to Apple’s latest commercials . However, what if your regular party plans consist of a little more than your garden-variety rumpshaking? What if you like to throw a few libations into the mix?

Well, fret no longer, iPod owner. Now you can carry around a whole lot more than music in your pocket.

Introducing the iPod bartender, and the iPod bartender shuffle.

The iPod bartender places more than 200 popular drink recipes onto your iPod, in 16 easily navigatable categories, for free!

The iPod bartender shuffle, however, is a different animal entirely. This web application lets you pick from fifteen drink categories, specify a number of drinks to download, and name a BoozeMix. Then, you can transfer the resulting drinks into your iPod’s notes folder, and later, when you’re at the bar, you can see what you’re in for. Hey, it’s like Apple says – life is random.
